Baccarat was established in 1764 in the town of Baccarat, France. The town is located a little over 200 miles away from Paris. King Louis XV authorized Louis de Montmorency-Laval, the Bishop of Metz, to establish a glassworks in Baccarat. The production that ensued consisted of mirrors, stemware, and window panes until 1816, when the first crystal oven went into operation. By that time, there was over 3,000 workers employed.
1814 introduced the Harcourt service. The classic, timeless shape was an international bestseller. This innovative new cut magnified the light in the crystal.
In 1823, Baccarat received its first royal commission by King Louis XVIII. Afterwards, Baccarat received many royal commissions throughout the world.
In 1827, Baccarat became the first French crystal manufacturer to exhibit chandeliers.
Baccarat Crystal received a gold metal in the National Exhibition of Industrial Products when they became the first glassworks in France to create colored crystal in 1839. They remain today a leader in this art, particularly for the invention of the famous gold ruby red and opaline colors.
Baccarat received a commission for the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul, Turkey. The project was built between 1843 and 1856. The palace has the largest collection of Baccarat Crystal chandeliers in the world and it houses the “Crystal Staircase.” The staircase is horseshoe-shaped and every baluster is made of Baccarat Crystal. The palace is now a museum and is open for viewing today.
Baccarat’s brand was registered at the commercial court of Paris on October 29th, 1860.

As the Imperial Era ended in 1867, Baccarat found themselves growing in popularity in Asia. Their strongest production area was perfume bottles and by 1907 the production came to over 4,000 perfume bottles per day.
By 1906, Baccarat designed a stemware set for Tsar Nicolas II in Russia. It featured a colored-overlay clear crystal and was entirely engraved.
In 1936, Baccarat’s signature became applied systematically to every product. The old paper label technique was replaced by an acid-etched trademark. In 1990, a laser was used to apply the logo. Now, all Baccarat signatures are sand engraved. After 1936, jewelry became marked with a single logo and starting in 1997, all chandeliers featured a red crystal pampille.
Baccarat expanded their company when they installed a subsidiary Baccarat Crystal Boutique, Baccarat Inc., in the United States. It was created in New York City on 57th Street in 1948.
The Musee des Arts Décoratifs in the Louvre holds an extensive retrospective exhibition in honor of Baccarat’s 200 years of achievement in 1964.
Baccarat’s popularity continued to grow in Asia so much that they opened a subsidiary, Baccarat Pacific, in Tokyo in 1984.
